Why this course matters

  • Uncontrolled energy release is a leading cause of serious maintenance-related injuries
  • Many fatal incidents occur during servicing, cleaning or fault-finding tasks
  • LOTO failures are commonly linked to poor communication and shortcuts
  • Effective LOTO systems significantly reduce the risk of fatal and life-changing injuries

  • Overview

Unexpected release of energy is one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatalities during maintenance and servicing activities. LOTO is a critical control measure designed to prevent the accidental start-up of machinery or the release of hazardous energy while work is being carried out.

This LOTO Awareness course provides learners with essential knowledge of hazardous energy sources, isolation procedures and the importance of following safe systems of work. By the end of the course, participants will understand why LOTO is necessary, when it must be applied and their role in ensuring equipment is safely isolated before maintenance or repair begins.

  • Who should take this course?

    This training is suitable for:

    • Workers involved in maintenance, servicing or inspection activities
    • Operators working with machinery, equipment or energy systems
    • Supervisors and team leaders responsible for safe isolation procedures
    • Contractors carrying out work on site-controlled equipment
  • Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

LO1: Explain what LOTO is and why it is essential for workplace safety

LO2: Identify different types of hazardous energy, including:

    • Electrical
    • Mechanical
    • Hydraulic
    • Pneumatic
    • Thermal
    • Chemical

LO3: Explain the risks associated with uncontrolled or residual energy

LO4: Describe the purpose and key steps of a LOTO procedure

LO5: Identify common LOTO devices and their correct use

LO6: Explain roles and responsibilities within a LOTO system

LO7: Explain the importance of verification, testing and zero-energy checks

LO8: Describe common failures and unsafe behaviours related to LOTO

LO9: Explain how LOTO fits within permit-to-work and control of work systems

LO10: Explain the consequences of failing to follow LOTO procedures

  • Course content

This course combines high-impact visuals, clear narration and interactive activities to guide learners through:

    • What hazardous energy is and where it is found in the workplace
    • Real-world incidents caused by uncontrolled energy release
    • Types of energy isolation and residual energy hazards
    • LOTO devices, systems and isolation points
    • Step-by-step LOTO process, including verification
    • Roles of authorised, affected and competent persons
    • Integration of LOTO with permits to work an safe systems
    • Common mistakes, shortcuts and how to prevent them
  • Assessment & certification

This LOTO Awareness training course ends with a 10-question multiple choice test with a downloadable certificate.

User certificates, training programmes and results are all stored centrally in your LMS and can be accessed at any time to reprint certificates, check pass marks and act as proof of a commitment to ongoing legal compliance.

  • What does my certificate include?

Your LOTO Awareness certificate includes your name, company (if applicable), course title, date of completion, expiry date, and relevant accreditations or approval stamps.

Note: If using SCORM delivery via a third-party LMS, certification will need to be generated within your host LMS
