Why this course matters
- In 2024/25, 124 workers were killed in work-related accidents
- Many workplaces use substances that can ignite easily, release flammable vapours or form explosive dust clouds
- DSEAR requires employers to assess risks, classify hazardous zones and implement strict controls
- Using incorrect or non-certified equipment in hazardous areas significantly increases risk
- Understanding and applying safe working practices helps prevent major incidents and protects lives

Overview
Flammable gases, vapours and dusts are present in many hazardous industries, and when these substances mix with air, they can create explosive atmospheres. A single spark, faulty equipment or poor control measures can lead to devastating fires or explosions.
This DSEAR Awareness course provides learners with essential knowledge of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) and how they apply in the workplace. It explores how explosive atmospheres form, where they are commonly found and the practical steps required to prevent ignition and control risks.
-
Who should take this course?
This training is suitable for:
- Personnel working in hazardous or high-risk environments (onshore or offshore)
- Employees and contractors handling flammable substances or working in potentially explosive atmospheres
- Maintenance, operations and engineering staff
-
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
LO1: Explain the purpose of DSEAR
LO2: Explain why DSEAR exists
LO3: Identify what qualifies as a "dangerous substance"
LO4: Recognise how explosive atmospheres can form
LO5: Understand employer responsibilities
LO6: Understand employee responsibilities
LO7: Identify basic control measures used to reduce risk
LO8: Recognise hazardous area zoning for gas, vapour and mists
LO9: Recognise hazardous area zoning for dust
LO10: Explain what to do in an emergency

Course content
This course combines high-impact visuals, clear narration and interactive activities to guide learners through:
- How dangerous substances can form explosive atmospheres
- The conditions required for files and explosions to occur (fuel, oxygen and ignition sources)
- Common ignition sources and how they are controlled
- The importance of identifying and classifying hazardous areas
- Practical measures to eliminate or reduce risk, including ventilation, maintenance and safe systems of work
-
Assessment & certification
This DSEAR Awareness training course ends with a 10-question multiple choice test with a downloadable certificate.
User certificates, training programmes and results are all stored centrally in your LMS and can be accessed at any time to reprint certificates, check pass marks and act as proof of a commitment to ongoing legal compliance.
-
What does my certificate include?
Your DSEAR Awareness certificate includes your name, company (if applicable), course title, date of completion, expiry date, and relevant accreditations or approval stamps.
