Based on what he sees across the industry, these are Rory Fraser’s top five learning trends shaping high-hazard industries today.
1. Process-Driven Training
Every organisation has processes and procedures. The challenge isn’t writing them; it’s making sure your workforce actually understand and apply them on site. Process-driven training brings those procedures to life in e-learning. It works particularly well for safety-critical processes, permit systems and site inductions.
When done well, process-driven training doesn’t just explain what the process is. It shows how it’s followed, why it matters and where people go wrong.
2. Simulation-Based Training
You can’t recreate the heat of a flame or the force of an explosion in e-learning, but you can simulate hazardous environments in a way that prepares your workforce mentally and operationally before they ever step on site.
Simulation-based training allows learners to experience high-risk situations in a controlled, safe setting. They can see hazards, understand consequences and recognise warning signs, without being exposed to real danger.
In high-hazard industries, preparation matters. Simulation helps people arrive on site with context, awareness and a far better understanding of the risks surrounding them.
3. Scenario-Based Learning
Scenario-based learning takes things a step further. Instead of following a linear course, learners move through non-linear scenarios, making decisions as they go. Those decisions change what they see on screen and how the scenario unfolds.
This mirrors reality far more closely than traditional e-learning. On site, people don’t follow a script, they make judgement calls under pressure.
Scenario-based learning allows organisations to test decision-making, not just knowledge recall. It exposes the consequences of poor choices and reinforces what good decisions look like in practice.
4. AI-Driven Learning
AI is often expected to be number one on lists like this, but in high-hazard environments, it needs to be used carefully.

In time-sensitive, shift-based industries, people don’t always have the luxury of sitting through long courses. Microlearning allows training to be broken into chunks, delivered when and where it’s needed.
Done properly, microlearning still achieves the same outcomes as longer courses, but in a way that fits operational reality. It’s particularly powerful when used for refresher training and re-assessment, updates or reinforcing critical knowledge just before work starts.
