Why this course matters

  • Hydrogen sulphide can cause unconsciousness and death within minutes at high concentrations
  • H₂S is heavier than air and can accumulate in confined or low-lying areas
  • Reliance on smell is dangerous because exposure quickly deadens the sense of smell
  • Effective detection, emergency response and escape procedures save lives

  • Overview

Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is one of the most dangerous toxic gases encountered in hazardous industrie. Colourless, highly toxic and often undetectable at dangerous concentrations, H₂S can rapidly cause serious injury or death if workers are not properly trained to recognise and respond to risks.

This Hydrogen Sulphide (H₂S) Awareness course provides learners with essential knowledge about the properties, hazards, detection, and control of H₂S gas in the workplace. Learners will explore how H₂S is generated, where it may be encountered, the health effects of exposure and the emergency actions required to protect themselves and others.

  • Who should take this course?

    This training is suitable for:

    • Personnel working in hazardous or potentially sour gas environments
    • Personnel working in confined spaces or process areas
    • Supervisors and safety representatives
    • Personnel involved in drilling, production, refining, wastewater, or chemical processing
  • Learning outcomes

    LO1: Describe what H₂S is

LO2: Identify typical work activities and environments where H₂S may be present

LO3:  Recognise the health effects of H₂S exposure at different concentrations

LO4: Explain why the sense of smell cannot be relied upon to detect H₂S

LO5: State the UK Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) for hydrogen sulphide and understand their significance

LO6: Identify the purpose and basic operation of gas detection equipment

LO7: Outline safe working practices when working in areas where H₂S may be present

LO8: Describe the hierarchy of control measures used to reduce the risk of H₂S exposure under COSHH

LO9: Describe the immediate actions to take in an H₂S emergency

LO10: Explain safe emergency response principles

  • Course content

This course combines high-impact visuals, clear narration and interactive activities to guide learners through:

    • What H₂S is, its properties and where it is commonly found
    • Common H₂S sources in high-risk activities
    • Exposure routes and why smell cannot be relied upon for detection
    • Fixed gas detection systems and portable H₂S monitors
    • Alarm systems, warning signals and emergency communications
    • Safe working practices such as ventilation ad permits to work
    • Emergency response principles and procedures
  • Assessment & certification

This Hydrogen Sulphide (H₂S) Awareness training course ends with a 10-question multiple choice test with a downloadable certificate.

User certificates, training programmes and results are all stored centrally in your LMS and can be accessed at any time to reprint certificates, check pass marks and act as proof of a commitment to ongoing legal compliance.

  • What does my certificate include?

Your Hydrogen Sulphide (H₂S) Awareness training certificate includes your name, company (if applicable), course title, date of completion, expiry date, and relevant accreditations or approval stamps.

Note: If using SCORM delivery via a third-party LMS, certification will need to be generated within your host LMS
