The OPITO Hydrogen Technology Series: Closing Skills Gaps in the Energy Sector
As the energy sector accelerates its transition to clean energy, a clear need has emerged for new skills in hydrogen. To meet this challenge, Chorus partnered with OPITO, the global skills body for the industry, to create the Hydrogen Technology Series — an online learning programme that equips technicians, graduates, and office staff with the comprehensive training needed to work safely and successfully with hydrogen technologies.
By creating adaptable training for the workforce of tomorrow, the Hydrogen Technology Series supports OPITO’s strategy to build the skills needed for the energy transition.

The Problem
Hydrogen is emerging as a key fuel in the drive towards net zero. It’s transforming the energy landscape and reshaping the future of how we power industries, transport, and everyday life.
With this transition comes challenge: it introduces new safety risks, skills gaps, and technical demands that current training methods aren’t equipped to handle.
The lack of a quality training solution creates long-term risks for both workforce safety and operational efficiency. Developing comprehensive, accessible resources is essential to support a safe and effective transition.
The Solution
Together with OPITO, we created custom training that helps learners build the knowledge and confidence to work with hydrogen as part of the shift to clean energy.
To build workforce confidence in hydrogen, we designed interactive e-learning that combines industry expertise with practical insight. Hosted in an easy-to-use platform, the modules guide learners through hydrogen’s role in the energy mix, how it’s produced, stored, and transported, and the safety and environmental considerations that come with it.
We built the modules around recognised health, safety, and regulatory standards, using our extensive experience in creating safety training. By combining e-learning expertise with competency know-how, we delivered a digital experience that engages learners through real-world scenarios and practical applications.

What's next
Following the success of the Hydrogen Technology Series, OPITO and Chorus are developing additional learning modules to address emerging low-carbon technologies and advanced safety standards.
