At Chorus, we believe that quality isn’t just a box to tick, it’s a mindset. It’s about making sure our learning experiences are not only accurate and effective but also engaging and accessible to everyone. That’s why we’re so excited to introduce one of our newest team members, Claire Bowers, who has recently joined us as Quality Control Analyst, to lead the charge on quality control across our digital learning content.
Claire brings a wealth of experience in editing and e-learning, alongside a sharp eye for detail honed over years in both the public sector and freelance proofreading, but her role extends far beyond quality control. Claire is involved from the earliest stages of course development, helping to shape the learner journey by reviewing scripts, advising on tone and flow, and ensuring every element reflects Chorus’s standards. She works closely with designers and developers throughout the build process, refining content and conducting rigorous checks so that the finished product is not only accurate and compliant but also engaging, accessible, and learner friendly.
In this Q&A, Claire shares more about her journey to Chorus, her approach to quality, and what she’s most excited to tackle in her new role.
Tell me about your career background before joining Chorus.
I worked as a PA in the public sector (NHS, trade union and RGU) for 15 years before moving into e-learning in 2017. I have always had an interest in proofreading and editing and worked freelance in this field for years, proofing novels, company documentation and student theses.
When did you join Chorus, and what drew you to the role?
I joined Chorus just three weeks ago! Having previously worked with Rory, I was excited by the opportunity to do so again—his leadership style fits well with how I like to work. He values independent thinking and genuinely listens to ideas and suggestions, which creates a great place to work where you’re trusted and backed to do your job well. I was also drawn to the unique opportunity of building the Quality Control processes and procedures from the ground up, which is a challenge I’m looking forward to.
What are your key responsibilities?
I am involved at every stage of the development of a course – I edit the scripts when they’ve been drafted (checking the learning objectives are appropriate and measurable, all text is accurate and relevant, the questions are clear and concise, etc.). Then, once the course has been built, a full quality check takes place (are the images used suitable for the content? Are the onscreen text and graphics consistent with brand guidelines? Are the timings of the animations on point? Is the audio correct?) And then, before the course is deployed, I upload the course to the Chorus Academy and thoroughly test it – the course must be locked, function properly, and “complete” correctly, generating a certificate.
What does 'quality' mean to you in the context of digital learning?
For me, it means making sure the content actually works for the people using it. This means it must be clear, accurate, and easy to follow, as well as engaging.
With AI tools becoming more common in content creation, I believe this means the role of QC is paramount. As much as AI can speed up writing courses, it does not – and should not – replace human judgement. For a course to be top quality, it needs to be factually correct, well-structured and tailored to real people.
How do you work with other teams, like media or software, to maintain quality?
I know it is cliché but communication is key. Having worked with Corrie and Vicky before, I think we already have a good working relationship, so keeping in touch with them each day is easy and enjoyable and it makes sure that we are all on the same page.
I believe in being proactive – flagging issues early and asking questions when I am not sure. Everyone brings different strengths, and by staying connected, we can catch issues early and make sure the final product is the best it can be.
What are you looking forward to getting stuck into at Chorus over the next few months?
I am really looking forward to shaping the QC processes, getting the right systems in place and seeing them make a difference. It's a chance to set a strong foundation and make things run more smoothly for everyone.
I am also excited that everyone will get to see the wonderful courses that have been built by our fantastic media team!
Outside of work, do you have any interests or habits that influence your attention to detail or your approach to quality?
I enjoy being outdoors and exploring new places with my cockapoo, Tattie. That said, it is hard to switch off my proofreading brain – even when I am off the clock! Menus, TV adverts, leaflets, signage – nothing escapes a quick once-over. In fact, I once decided not to go to a particular restaurant because their menu was full of spelling mistakes and clumsy wording. Once a QC, always a QC!
