National Gas, a key player in the energy sector, recognised the critical need to bolster its cyber security defences in the face of growing digital threats.
National Gas collaborated with Chorus to develop bespoke e-Learning content aimed at enhancing cyber security awareness across the organisation. This initiative was pivotal in providing employees with the knowledge and skills to identify, prevent and respond to cyber threats, allowing the company to improve its digital infrastructure and safeguarding of sensitive information.
As a key infrastructure lifeline for the UK, National Gas faced escalating cyber security challenges, with sophisticated threats posing risks to operational integrity and data security.
The existing training programs were deemed insufficient to address the dynamic nature of modern day cyber threats, leaving employees underprepared to recognize and mitigate potential cyber incidents.
The lack of comprehensive cyber security training threatened not only the company's information assets, but also its reputation and compliance with industry regulations.
To address this pressing need, National Gas and Chorus embarked on a collaborative effort to create tailored e-Learning content focused on cyber security. Geri Wynne spearheaded the project, ensuring the training material was relevant, engaging, and accessible to all employees, regardless of their technical expertise.
The e-Learning modules covered a wide range of topics, including phishing, password security, data protection, and incident reporting. Interactive elements, such as simulations and quizzes, were integrated to enhance learning retention and encourage proactive cyber security practices.
“The course has been very well received. Our team is engaged and subcontractors can access materials easily and transparently. We can operate securely in the knowledge that our team is up to speed in being able to recognise cyber threats.”
The deployment of the cyber security e-Learning program marked a significant leap forward in National Gas's commitment to digital safety. Post-implementation assessments showed a marked improvement in employees' ability to identify and react to cyber threats, leading to a more resilient organisational position against cyber-attacks.
The initiative also fostered a culture of cyber security awareness, with employees feeling more empowered and responsible for protecting the company's digital assets. Furthermore, the program's success has set a precedent for ongoing cyber security education, ensuring National Gas remains vigilant and adaptive to the evolving cyber threat landscape.
“The content we are building with Chorus is far superior to what we’ve seen before. Using animation as the basis for the training helped us keep the content modular for multiple applications, and significantly increased knowledge retention. Rory and his team are fantastic at what they do!”
Encouraged by the positive outcomes of the cyber security e-Learning initiative, Geri Wynne and National Gas plan to extend their collaboration with Chorus. Future plans include updating and expanding the cyber security training curriculum to incorporate emerging threats and technologies, as well as developing a continuous learning program to keep pace with the fast-evolving cyber security domain.
By prioritising cyber security education, National Gas aims to not only protect its infrastructure and data but also reinforce its commitment to operational excellence and performance in hazardous industries.
